New York City is full of different cultures, backgrounds, hobbies, and entertainment. The city consists of small communities of like-minded individuals that revolve around many iconic locations.

For some “musicians, New York’s golden era was the 60’s and 70’s—the Chelsea Hotel, Janis and Jimi and young Bob Dylan—but for artists and scenesters, it was surely the ’80’s” (Interview Magazine). Throughout the years, New York began developing new cultures that eventually began spreading to other areas and increased its popularity.

Years earlier, another group of New York City entertainers were breaking into the main-stream culture “the Harlem Renaissance [and] established the African-American renaissance in the United States” (Wikipedia). NYC hadn’t always welcomed diversity. Before, clubs
(entertainment) were specifically for white people. But then “African-American musicians and other performers [began playing] to mixed audiences. Harlem’s cabarets and clubs attracted both Harlem residents and white New Yorkers seeking out Harlem nightlife. Harlem’s famous Cotton Club, where Duke Ellington performed, carried this to an extreme, by providing black entertainment for exclusively white audiences. Ultimately, the more successful black musicians and entertainers who appealed to a mainstream audience moved their performances downtown” (wikipedia). This is where cultural diffusion began (in a very iconic location).

People who walked threw New York described it as seeing ” pop culture at the level of three-dollar movies, blaxploitation films, porno shops, hookers, gangs, and drugs… it allowed us to talk about the underbelly of culture.” (Interview Magazine). I personally believe this must have been a world of chaos. With just drugs involved you can imagine what it was like. Especially with racism. I don’t believe African american’s agreed with the the stereotypical roles that their race was given. Much controversy is what you’d imagine…just like in the movies!

Here’s a BIG topic. Women. He’s another. Harassment. Men don’t really respect or acknowledge what their comments could do to a woman. That is why there is now a movement starting due to all the harassment men have done to women. This is performed physically and verbally.
